Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-1 at the weekend, but a lot of the headlines after the game weren’t necessarily about the performance.

Indeed, a lot of the chat after the match wasn’t about the Gunners’ fantastic performance against Liverpool, it was more about how Mikel Arteta and his team celebrated, or perhaps over-celebrated, the result.

Speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has been discussing Arteta’s celebrations after this match, and he’s claimed that Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham would never celebrate in such a way unless he’d actually won a trophy.

Ange Postecoglou would never celebrate like Mikel Arteta

Sutton shared his verdict on Arteta’s celebrations.

“If that was Tottenham in that same position, what would you do Chris would you celebrate with them?” Sutton was asked.

“Oh dear me, you’d never see Ange Postecoglou celebrate like that, he’s quite controlled, it’s great a punch or two, there’s too much being made of this celebration, I thought it was over the top, you celebrate when you win something,” Sutton said.

What’s wrong with it?

Mikel Arteta did celebrate passionately after Arsenal’s win against Liverpool, and while he has received a lot of backlash, we can’t help but question why everyone has such an issue with this.

Football is about these moments, these big wins that are just as cathartic for the players and staff as it is for fans.

If Arteta wanted to let it all out on the day, what’s wrong with that? Yes, they haven’t won any silverware, but this was a huge statement, and a celebration like that only makes the manager feel closer to the fanbase and the players.

In our view, there’s nothing wrong with what Arteta did at the weekend, and even if Ange Postecoglou wouldn’t act in this way, that isn’t to say this is an issue.
