Rio Ferdinand has named the Arsenal Invincible that he believes does not get all of the credit which they deserved when people discuss the all-time greats.
Of course, the Arsenal Invincibles will go down as one of the greatest teams English football has ever seen. Under Arsene Wenger, the Gunners did not lose a single league game during the 2003/04 campaign. It was their second league title in three years, and their third under Wenger.
Unsurprisingly, the star of the show during that season was Thierry Henry. The Frenchman scored 39 goals in all competitions, while he also provided 15 assists.
Rio Ferdinand suggests Thierry Henry does not get the full credit he deserves
Henry went on to become Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer. And by the time he had departed for Barcelona, he had scored 228 times and provided 103 assists in 377 games in all competitions.
For many of us, Thierry Henry is the greatest player the Premier League has ever seen. But obviously, there are a number of other names in the frame.
Oddly however, speaking on Vibe with Five, Rio Ferdinand believes that Henry deserves even more praise as he discussed the greatest strikers of the modern era.
“Thierry doesn’t get mentioned enough by the way. I think that might be why he might have that bitterness in his voice,” he said.
“Do you know what Thierry was doing to people? In the Bernabeu? Ramos and Carlos could not chat to Thierry. They couldn’t chat to him. He was going there and playing playground football at the Bernabeu. Telling you.”
Centre-back will know better than most just how good Arsenal legend was
In fairness, Rio Ferdinand played against Henry on a number of occasions. And the centre-back was at his peak in the years the Frenchman was tearing things up. So he will have a better idea than most of just how good Henry was.
It is hard to argue with those who pick out some other names and claim that they are the greatest the Premier League has seen.
But you will surely find a lot of neutrals who would insist that there was just no-one better than Henry.
